Hi and welcome to JustAnswer,

To my understanding, there are only 2 possible AUDIO OUT connections on a Sony KDL-40S3000:
  • analog red & white (VAR/FIX).

Assuming a pair of red & white RCA to RCA cables would be used, then it would be the (VAR/FIX). To enable external amp/speaker and turn off internal speaker, set the Sony to:
  • press HOME to display XMB;
  • < or > to select Media Category SETTING;
  • press UP or DOWN to select Category Object Bar AUDIO OPTIONS;
  • select AUDIO OUT;
  • select VARIABLE (TV's remote control's external speaker's volume);
  • pres CENTER button when desired item is highlighted;
  • press RETURN or HOME to exit.

Good luck and thank you for asking JustAnswer.

where do I find the xmb or media category.

Press the HOME button on the Bravia's remote control. Perhaps an image from the user's manual (p. 9) could provide further insight.
