I just acquired a Hitachi 50VG825 from a coworker. The TV turns on and seems to work fine, but the center of the screen is yellow. I have adjusted the various color settings (color and tint), but the center remains yellow. The outer edges are fine, it's just the center that is discolored. I am wondering what might be the cause of this? And yes, both my TEMP and LAMP LEDs are blinking. The guy I got the TV from said that it did that while he had it too. He can't remember when it started. But as I stated, the TV does work. Is there anything I can do to fix this? I've already looked into replacing the bulb, but I don't feel like the bulb is causing the yellow problem. Then again, I don't know anything about TVs. Thanks for your help.
Customer,
Thank you for posting your question on Just Answer! I will be happy to help you with this problem. Can you please give us some more information so I can better answer your questions.
-Has anything been replaced or done to the tv?
-How old is the unit?
- Do you have this problem on all inputs? (dvd, cable, satellite, ect.)
Please give me this information and I will be happy to assist you further.
Thank you,
Tim Nolan
I'm not the original owner, so I don't know everything that has been done to the TV. Based on the information from my co-worker, the bulb was replaced once by someone via his warranty (or extended warranty). The unit is approximately 4 years olds.Yes, the yellow problem exists on all inputs. Definately not any of my cables.
Well then I am sorry to give you the bad news but that tv is plagued with the common bad optic engine syndrome.
This problem is very common in these new LCD projection sets, what happens is the optical engine goes bad and needs to be replaced, we change out a TON of them. Very very common problem. The bad news for you is the part cost is around $450 and a good repairman will run you $300-$400 for the installation.
If you have any electronic repair experience you might be inclined to try to repair this yourself. If so then I might be able to assist you in the change of the engine but let me warn you these units are very delicate and can easily be broken, and if you brake it you cannot return it.
I am sorry to bring you the bad news, im sure its not what you wanted to hear.

Thank you for your quick reply. I'm signing off shortly, but I'll be back tomorrow. What can I expect from this issue in the future? Is it going to get worse, stay the same, fail completely?I have built a couple computers, but I wouldn't necessarily call that electronic repair experience. Are we talking soldering iron kind or work? Or just screws and plugs work?In your opinion, is the repair worthwhile?
I must sign off for the night as well, let me give you a better idea of what you are looking at tomorrow when I have more time. I will give you a full answer on all your questions when I get back tomorrow.
Sounds good?
Thanks,
Sounds great. I'll check back in later tonight.
As far as the future goes, no one knows. Normally they progressively get worse until the whole screen is covered with the problem. Sometimes they don't get any worse however, but its never going to get better.
There is no soldering work involved in the change of the engine, however it is ALOT of screw and plug work. You must be able to remember exactly how this set came apart because the tolerance of getting the back of the set back on correctly is like 0, meaning if you have a wire out of place or a piece of plastic not quite right then the back is not going to fit correctly.
If you ever consider replacing this yourself you will need a service manual. I can give instructions and help if you get stuck but I could never do justice on how to take this engine out and get it back together again like the manual can.

Thanks for all your help. I think I'll just wait and see what happens. A little more money than I want to spend to fix the TV.
