My Samsung HDTV power cycles when tuned on

Please reply as soon as possible so that we can finish answering your question.
Hello Edward. Here are the details: 1. My TV is Samsung HL-S5679W-LED-1080p 2. I have owned the TV for a little less than 2 yrs now. 3. I have a Directv HD Receiver HDDVR HR20 (connected using HDMI) 4. I have an Xbox360 (connected using component cable) So the problem is this: About 2 months ago, I noticed that when I turn my TV and HDDVR receiver ON together, the TV would cycle ON then OFF every 2 seconds or so, for about 4-5 times, and then turn ON. I use the Directv remote to turn on both the TV and the receiver at the same time. The power cycling does not happen if I just turn on the TV and not the HDDVR receiver. The power cycling happens if I turn on the HDDVR receiver first, and then turn on the TV My current workaround: I realized that a simple way to avoid the problem was to first turn on just the TV, then turn on the Directv receiver - then the power cycling problem does not occur. Initially I thought the problem was with my Direct TV receiver. I swapped it out with my other (bedroom, non HD) Directv receiver, but found that I was having the same problem with the other receiver also. What finally convinced me that it was the TV and not the receiver was when I found that If I have source set to "Component1" for my XBox, and then turn ON my Xbox, it goes into the same power cycle perpetually - infact with the XBox it never comes out of the power cycling. A SIDE NOTE - I have recently noticed that using my workaround has become more difficult - I now have to turn on the TV first, then wait about 30 seconds (for the TV to warm up) and then turn on the HDDVR. If I don't wait the 30 secs, and turn on the HDDVR right after turning the TV on, it goes into power cycling.
I have opted out of this question since I have no information on this model in my database. By opting out this prompts other experts to reply if they have the answer for you. Hopefully another expert will respond soon. Regards,Edward
Hi!
I know this is a long shot, but can you try just unplugging the Samsung from the power for 30 seconds, plugging it back in, and see if that makes any difference?
When I first read the first part of your problem, I immediately thought it was another odd handshaking issue with HDMI, but if component video does it, too, then that blows that theory.
Another piece of information that might help is to unplug all of your inputs and try turning the set on. Does it do this cycling problem then?
If this were any other brand of TV, I'd suggest turning the set on and off with an unused input selected, but Samsungs won't allow you to select an inactive input.
Give that a try and let me know!
Chuck
No that didn't help ... Any other options I can try?
Nope, sorry, not if it still does this cycling with no inputs. Very odd.
I'll also opt out and see if anyone else has any thoughts.
Welcome to Just Answer.
This is not an uncommon problem with this set, not exactly like your but many customer will discover a voodoo that will get this set to work ie if they tap on it or if they first use the remote then the tv power button or if they first turn on the set walk away then turn on the set at the same time as the cable box.
This is not really helping but it seems to because of the failure, the set has a defective lamp door, the switch has been recalled because of it... the set acts haunted at power on is how it is usually discribed. What happens is caps CS860 / CS860 BOTH ARE 1500UF AT 10V in the power supply fail and damage the lamp door switch if you open the lamp door the set has a switch to detect it, and the switch is read at power on...
The best bet is have a technician come out and ask him to to replace the caps listed above and ask if he will bypass the lamp door switch (it is safety circuit to protect you i from not opening the door with the set on so DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR WITH THE SET ON)
This should resolve the issue, it is listed in a samsung tech bulletin.
The other possibility is a failed power supply but less likely.
Hope this helps,
If you have any questions please feel free to ask,
Thanks,
John
