Hello, I hava a Hitachi 50v710 rear projection hdtv which is 3 years old. I have recently noticed a dull yellow spot in the center of the screen. Searching online for some answers has been confusing. Some say replace the light engine, others say clean the green lens due to dust and others are suggesting replacing the bulb. Help!
Thanks for choosing JustAnswer for your TV question!
Unfortunately that sounds like the dreaded "overheating LCD panel" symptom. Infamous in the 50vXXX series of TV's as well as some others.
The entire light engine has to be replaced I'm afraid.
Just in the last 6 months I had a customer who had the same exact symptom, and she called Hitachi and they covered the replacement of her light engine, minus the labor.
Not bad for an almost 5 year old model!!!

The above website shows pictures of it in RED, but it occurs in blue as well, just less frequently.
If you have to pay out of pocket for the whole repair, I suggest you scrap the TV, as the light engine and labor will run you almost $1000.
Try contacting Hitachi customer support about the issue, I have seen them be very generous, even out of warranty!
