Customer Question

I have a 2003 VW Eurovan with 180K miles. Just have the transmission rebuilt including a new torque converter. Check engine light has come on and code indicates the a failure of the clutch to lock up. with the replacement of the torque converter I am wondering if it could be a sensor vice the clutch itself.
JA: Does the light stay on, or does it blink?
Customer: Stays on
JA: Are you fixing your Eurovan yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: Transmission was rebuilt by a professional shop, and under warranty, VW dealer has diagnosed the problem, it is at the dealer now.
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: I think that's everything

Mechanic to call back after lunch with codes thrown. What would cause the clutch to NOT lock up as appropriate?
Expert:  Ron replied 6 months ago.

In most cases it usually a signal concern and or the lock up solenoid has failed . At either rate this should have been addressed by the builder.

Customer: replied 6 months ago.
the lock up is mechanical (solenoid) vs. hydraulic? Is the solenoid part of the torque converter or separate?
Expert:  Ron replied 6 months ago.

The solenoid is separate but it also requires the Hydraulics to be working properly as well. This sounds to me like the builder did not get something right.
