Customer Question

About a month ago when I'd put my truck into drive and I'd move about a foot, the truck would suddenly feel like I was pulling a heavy trailer. I didn't worry too much because my truck would drive fine after it did this and it would only happen when my truck sat for several hours. When the temps dropped here it now shudders until I drive for a few feet and once again it will only do this when it sits for a couple of hours, if I shut off my truck to do shopping or the like it would do this. I removed the front drive shaft because it felt like the transfer case was partially engaging the 4wd, it drove perfect for a week and I thought it was fixed until yesterday it starting doing it again. I've also replaced the transfer case fluid and there are no metal bits or burnt smell.

is it a 1/2 ton?with the 4l60e transmission?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
it is the 1/2 ton with that transmission, could this be an issue with the transfer case?
Expert:  Tim's Auto Repair replied 1 year ago.

from the way you explain,it doesnt sound as if it is the transfer case

Expert:  Tim's Auto Repair replied 1 year ago.

to me,it sounds as if the low/reverse clutches are slipping/binding

Expert:  Tim's Auto Repair replied 1 year ago.

if you havent already, change the transmission filter

Expert:  Tim's Auto Repair replied 1 year ago.

a clogged filter could cause this problem

Expert:  Tim's Auto Repair replied 1 year ago.

you need to replace the filter asap,,it could burn out those clutches, then it will loose all gears

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I changed the transmission filter and brand new fluid last night, the old fluid looked good and there were no metal shavings in the pan or fluid. It was still doing it this morning.
Expert:  Tim's Auto Repair replied 1 year ago.

the transmission never shifts like into neutral on its own?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
It does not shift into neutral (or any other gear) on it's own.
Expert:  Tim's Auto Repair replied 1 year ago.

can you please send a phone call request?i think i may be of better help on the phone.

Expert:  Tim's Auto Repair replied 1 year ago.

does the engine light stay on?if so,can you give me the trouble codes?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
There are no trouble codes and haven't been.
Expert:  Tim's Auto Repair replied 1 year ago.

ok

can you send a phone call request ,so i can talk to you so i may get a better sense of what is going on?

thanks

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I can't afford any more costs right now.
Expert:  Tim's Auto Repair replied 1 year ago.

ok

that is fine

when you say it vibrates from a take off,,does the engine rev and not pull the truck?

Expert:  Tim's Auto Repair replied 1 year ago.

does it only do this in first gear?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
It feels like it's directly below the driver side seat, it only happens when it initially is in first gear and it hesitates going into second. After doing this the truck drives normal but the hesitation is getting worse when the temps drop.
Expert:  Tim's Auto Repair replied 1 year ago.

ok

again,,sense it doesnt give a code and from the way you explain it isnt electrical

Expert:  Tim's Auto Repair replied 1 year ago.

and, this doesnt sound like a bad transfer case

Expert:  Tim's Auto Repair replied 1 year ago.

it sounds as if the low/reverse clutches are slipping

Expert:  Tim's Auto Repair replied 1 year ago.

the reason it does it the colder it is ,is because the fluid is much thicker when cold

Expert:  Tim's Auto Repair replied 1 year ago.

i would think it will soon quit pulling at all

Expert:  Tim's Auto Repair replied 1 year ago.

there is nothing more[other than replacing the filter] that you can do for it from the outside

Expert:  Tim's Auto Repair replied 1 year ago.

and,you have already tried the filter

Expert:  Tim's Auto Repair replied 1 year ago.

so,i would think that the transmission will soon need to be rebuilt or replaced,,sorry

i dont see an easy fix here

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I brought it into a shop yesterday and it was a broken transfer case snap ring, it runs perfect now...
Expert:  Tim's Auto Repair replied 1 year ago.

im am sorry i was so wrong.but i am glad it was an easy fix

thanks
