OK, I am thinking 2 possible issues.
One is a problem in the transfer case itself, worn out gear and such, that would show as the fluid being contaminated with a metal steak.

Two and far more likely is a bad sensor. It’s the one that tells it what gear its in. Its called the Encoder sensor. Directions for changing that are attached in the document.
