Hello and welcome to JustAnswer!

The trans is going into limp in.When the trans controller sees an issue it thinks can cause damage or it doesn't have complete control it will set a fault code, remove power from the solenoid pack and lock you in third gear.

There are many possible causes for limp in ranging from internal trans issues, speed sensors, solenoids and pressure switches, wiring, the TIPM, and the trans controller itself.

The first step in diagnosing the problem will be to use a scan tool to see what fault codes are setting and go from there. The most common cause of limp in on this trans is the solenoid pack, but I've also seen speed sensor issues. If the problem always and only happens when shifting into fourth gear then it may be a mechanical failure in the trans.
