You don't need to shift the transmission or transfer case into neutral before removing it. You can have the transfer case in any position when you remove it but it's better to have it in*****so you can rotate the front prop shaft to remove the bolts. When you go to install the replacement, just move the lever on the transfer case so the rod lines up with the hole in the lever.
