My transmission gave out on a 2006 Mazda Tribute, I took it

Customer Question

My transmission gave out on a 2006 Mazda Tribute, I took it to AAMCO transmissions and they quoted $3,969 to repair!!! Sounds like a ripoff to me, wouldn't I be better off buying a used transmission?

Hello, I am Randall

What engine? and is this 4x4?

Also, you say repair, are they saying "rebuild'

if repair is all you know, thats real open ended and hard to answer

LMk thanks

Customer replied358 days and 6 hours ago.

Hi Randall, they are saying "rebuild with kits and all" my Tribute is a 4x2.

Customer replied358 days and 6 hours ago.

By the way it is a 6cylinder engine, so it's the 3.0L Tribute

ok, first off, a rebuild book time is near 20 hours + , this is after trans is out.

Book time to remove and install is 9.2 hours

so,, if shop rate is say $100 per hour,, $920 is just remove/install and the rebuild is about $2000

+ there are parts, fluids. fees etc so their estimate is close on target. you are not being ripped by any means if this is a rebuild and away you go

Now.. you ask about used,. sure,, you can used, they vary in price say $700 -$1600 depending on miles on it

BUT!! you will only have a 30-90 warranty whereas you MUST ask about the AAMCO warranty,

Generally thery are much better, much longer, and can be used Nationwide

used may save $ but,, may cause more headaches and even more 4 in long run if it fails say 6 months after done, You still have to pay the 9.2 hours to change it , fluids etc

in my opinion, a 2006, I would go with a reman trans froma local shop, may help svae some and still have good warranty OR go with the rebuild as long as you are ok and fully understand the warranty.

usd is last on the list and would be like, fi you were trading, selling etc just to get on road again. This is my opinion

Thank you, I appreciate the response, The vehicle has 118k on it and I was really surprised since I really took care of this vehicle. Was hoping to make it to 200k. I had another 2001 Tribute hat made it to 155k and I even sold it for a great resale value.

Tough decision, but sounds like the rebuild is the way to go if I want to keep it

Very sorry for delay. had to step out. i am not only tech and trans rebuilder of 35 years, i own a Tribute i drive each day./

Mine is a 2002 with 122K on it. One trans down. They were bad from the go.

I knew this and I went with a Jasper reman. Little pricey but.. huge Nationwide warranty for I think near 4 years. Working well on year 2

Please keep me in the loop as it goes or if you have any follow ups

Thanks

Randalll

Went to AAMCO for the rebuild, total cost was $3,200. the owner made "concessions" and I have a 12K, 12 month warranty. It feels good driving it again. Will go back to AAMCO this week, since they want to do a recheck....

Now I wonder how long will the honeymoon last? I wonder if I could still make it to 200K on this one... I love my Tribute and the fact that I have no car payments. Although, I now have to pay the credit card off for the $3200.

Best Regards XXX XXXXXX for the advice!
