My son got a ticket for violation of driving after 12:00 a.m. in New Jersey he is 17. He has had a farmers licenses since he was 16 and is very responsible. He went with his friends to a convience store to get snacks after playing video games at home. As luck would have it a tail light was out on the vehicle he was driving. He was pulled over. When the officer discoverd he was 17 he cited him for tail light and violation of the law known in NJ as the Cinderella law. What is the consequences, what is a viable approach for the best outcome ?

Good afternoon,I'm sorry to hear of your dilemma. As you may know, the NJ Cinderella law, which prohibits people under 21 from driving on public roads between midnight and 5 AM, and requires that owners of vehicles which are driven by family members younger than 21 years old, must obtain an place on the rear license place a small red sticker identifying the vehicle as one operated by a young adult---at least occasionally. The penalty for operating the vehicle without a decal---for a person under 21 years of age, is a fine up to $100. There is no other penalty. The best approach is to get the decal, put it on the license plate and show proof of the remediation along with proof of the repair of the light and ask for a reduction in fine. You may reply back to me using the Continue the Conversation link if you have additional questions; and if you do, I ask that you please keep in mind that I do not know what you may already know or with what you need help, unless you tell me.
