I have this exact problem someone posted six years ago I have been on here before with this problemhELLO. i HAVE A 1986 TOYOTA MR2 WITH AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION . THE PROBLEM IS WHEN YOU PUT THE CAR IN DRIVE IT DOESN'T DOWNSHIFT AND TRIES TO YAKE OFF IN 3RD GEAR BUT IF YOU PULL IT INTO FIRST MANUALLY IT WILL GO INTO 1ST BUT WHEN YOU SWITCH TO SECOND IT SHIFTS TO 3RD WITHIN A SEECOND. iT WILL NOT KICK DOWN EITHER Submitted: 6 years agohELLO. i HAVE A 1986 TOYOTA MR2 WITH AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION . Customer: Car is like new one hundred thousand and yes
JA: Are you fixing your MR2 yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: Adjusting cables checked timing car runs great
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

Have you checked the throttle pressure cable on the throttle body linkage, is it adjusted correctly and is it moving like it should?,Sometimes they get stuck in the cable housing

Hello and welcome to just answer, my name is ***** ***** master tech here to help. I read your notes ans have a question before we begin. Files are not kept on each request that comes through this sight especially that long ago so I want to know if you still want help solving this problem?

Do you think it could be solenoid sin tranny or tourqe converter

No this to me is probably a governor sticking and or shift valve. Have you done an transmission flush and service on it yet? dropping the pan to check for any particles?

Not yet was going to open it up to replace the shift solenoid

The governor controls the up and down shifts.
