When I turn the headlights on, the dash illumination goes out. So I can't drive at night.

This may sound like a foolish question but did you make sure the rheostat was not turned down? If you dial the rheostat all of the way up until clicks it will cause the illumination circuit to go to full intensity. It is located to the left of the steering column on the instrument panel. Let me know if this fixes the problem.
