Customer Question

My toyota tacoma suddenly stared to run roughly. I hit the gas a little and the check engine light came on. I ordered a new pic valve but was wondering what other things were covered by the light.
JA: Does the light stay on, or does it blink?
Customer: It blinks then stays on
JA: What year is your Tacoma?
Customer: 98
JA: Are you fixing your Tacoma yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: Yes I just ordered the pvc valve not in stock here be in tomorrow.
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: I do have a valve tapping but am talking to a mechanic about that

Hello, my name is ***** ***** I am a professional here at Justanswer. Thank you for your question and I will assist you with your concern.

The check engine light comes on when the PCM (computer ) sees a systems fault and when this happens the computer will set and store a fault code and or codes. In order to determine what is failing you are going to need to start with having the system scanned and the fault code and or codes retrieved. Most auto parts store such as Auto Zone will do this scan for you at no charge. The light flashing usually means the computer is seeing a direct engine misfire. If you can get the computer scanned and post back with the results. I will advise you from there as to the correct repair.

Sure thing. Let me know.

I went to the automotive store and had my computer read and had two cylinders misfiring. Replaced plugs and wires had problems with the rubber boot on one of coils so I am replacing it.

Misfiring in most cases is usually a failing spark plug or in some cases the coil. Let get the spark plugs changed as well as the boots and see if the problem clears.
