Hello and welcome to JustAnswer!

The trans is going into limp in. When the trans controller sees an issue that will prevent proper operation it will lock you in a single gear to prevent damage.

There are many causes for limp in including speed sensors, solenoids, wiring, the trans controller itself or a loss of power or ground to it, or internal transmission problems.

The first step in diagnosing the problem will be to use a scan tool or code reader to see what fault codes are setting when this happens and then testing would need to be done based on that, at the time the problem is happening. Electrical testing may need to be done at the time the problem is happening to determine exactly what is going on.
