I have a 1984 Toyota dyna. when I try to start it everything

Customer Question

I have a 1984 Toyota dyna. when I try to start it everything goes dead. With a voltage meter, the power reading goes instantly from about 13v to zero. After a few seconds the battery reads at about 4v, and then goes back to a fully charged reading. Any help appreciated.

Hello...welcome and thank you for using Justanswer.

Do you have a battery tester or anyone that can load test your battery ?

I would make sure the battery terminals are clean and tight and then load test the battery.

To me it sounds like your battery is weak/bad ,some of the cells are death , you will get your 12 volts reading but under a load it fails.

Good luck.

Let me know.

Please rate my answer if I have helped.

Thank you very much.

I have tried using a jump starter, the mechanic I had to call out who ended up towing me also used his own jump starter to no avail.

I am sorry I misread that...

Ok, using your voltmeter check for 12 volts on the small wire at the starter when turning the ignition key to start the engine, will need someone to help here.

Also with voltmeter ,check for 12 volts on the fat cable at the starter and also for good ground at the starter body.

Inspect the cables to the starter and ground cable to the engine make sure they are clean and tight.

When you turn the ignition key to start the vehicle ,do you hear any noise from the engine ,like... tack, tack, tack ?

If possible I would do the load test on the battery?

Good luck.

Let me know.

Thank you.
