Can a power steering unit suddenly fail after replacing the belt?

What year, make and model are we dealing with?

2004 Toyota highlander. I had the two belts replaced. The steering was fine when I entered the repair shop and after the belts were replaced, the steering was extremely hard to turn

I see. Did you also hear any new noises coming from the area (engine)?

NO. The repair shop said that the pump has to be changed because of sudden failure!

Yeah, I'm not buying this story. It sounds like they either put the belt on too loose or too tight and may have done some damage. Have you had a trusted repair shop look at this yet, to seek a second opinion?
