Customer Question

hi i have this sienna le 2012 that i tried to program the remote to, but i couldn't. this is how i did it: Procedure is essentially the same with the key and door opening closing procedure is listed below. To get into add mode you cycle the key on and off one time only. 1. REGISTRATION OF RECOGNITION CODE (MANUAL OPERATION) (a) The following conditions should be met. (1) No key is inserted in the ignition key cylinder. (2) Only driver side door is opened. (b) Perform the following operations to select the desired mode. (1) Insert and remove the key from the ignition switch twice within 5 seconds. (End in removed) (2) After the above operation, close and open the driver door twice. (End in open) Then insert the key into the ignition key cylinder and remove it. HINT: Complete this procedure within 40 seconds. (3) After the above operations, close and open the driver door twice. (End in open) Then insert the key into the ignition key cylinder and close the driver door. HINT: Complete this procedure within 40 seconds. (4) Turn the ignition switch from LOCK to ON and back to LOCK at approximately 1-second intervals 1 to 5 times to select a mode (see the illustration). Then remove the key from the ignition key cylinder. i did everything it says under 40 sec. what could be the problem?

Thank you for allowing me to help you with this concern today and am sorry to hear that this is happening. I will have to ask you a few questions so that I can get a better understanding as to what may be going on with your Sienna.

Where did you get these instructions from because they are incorrect?

You asked this question to an expert on this site?

And they gave you that procedure to program your remote to your 2012 Sienna?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.

yes

Expert:  Genchi Genbutsu replied 1 year ago.

What does the remote you are trying to program look like?

Ok, I'm trying to take a step back here because there are different remotes and procedures available on this vehicle. We just want to first make sure of a few things.

Did you just purchase this Sienna?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.

about 2 years back, but it came with a key only, no remote

Expert:  Genchi Genbutsu replied 1 year ago.

Ok, I see. So we are not sure that this Sienna even was built with keyless entry. This is the first time of you trying to program a remote and getting it to work, correct?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.

yes. r u serious, they made 2012 cars with no key less entry ?

Expert:  Genchi Genbutsu replied 1 year ago.

Yes they did. Now, when you are performing this sequence, did the door locks respond by locking or unlocking themselves?

This would be the response from the computer we are looking for and would confirm to us that this Sienna does have keyless entry.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.

nope, it doesn't do that. that's what i was waiting for, but....

Expert:  Genchi Genbutsu replied 1 year ago.

How many times have you tried this sequence?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.

for like 30-40 min.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.

if i give u the vin#, can u check if this car comes with remote or not, by any chance?

Expert:  Genchi Genbutsu replied 1 year ago.

Ok, please take a look at this video as it shows the exact programming sequence you are trying to perform. Please take note that the locks will respond to his inputs (just before he press both the lock and unlock buttons).

Customer: replied 1 year ago.

i've seen this video. i did the exact same steps.

Expert:  Genchi Genbutsu replied 1 year ago.

It appears that your Sienna may not have the keyless entry system or it is malfunctioning. There is a way to see if it was built with it. Do you have a Toyota Dealer nearby?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.

i'll probably call them tomorrow

Expert:  Genchi Genbutsu replied 1 year ago.

That would be the best first step. It is Dealer access only but if you give them you VIN number, they can pull the build sheet from the factory and see if it was installed when it was built. If they say that it was, then either you are doing the sequence incorrectly or the system is malfunctioning.
