The alarm on my 99 4 runner went off and I reset the system, but it still won't start. The key turns in the cylinder with no resistance at all.

so you cant feel any "spring back" when you turn the key to start and then release it?

Hi there,
If there is no spring action when releasing from the start position back to run, then the ignition switch needs to be removed and inspected. It's either the switch is bad or the key cylinder has come disconnected/broken from the switch, usually it's the switch though.
