I unplugged the positive battery cable from my vehicle

Hi. I unplugged the positive battery cable from my vehicle to clean it.
Battery dead. I jump started and it comes on. However if I turned the car off it won't start unless I used jumper cables? (the toyota 2006 has an remote engine starter. Thanks

It sounds like the alternator is not charging the battery back up or possibly the battery is the problem. Do you happen to have a voltmeter?
