Hello and thank you for trusting us with your Toyota question, My name is XXXXX XXXXX X will be assisting you today.
Are you available to discuss your question at this time?
If I may ask, can you take a video or an audio file recording the noise?
No, I'm sorry but I am not with my vehicle at this time. My vehicle is at the Firestone Complete Auto Care center.
To be honest I highly doubt the issue here is a transmission issue.
The transmission in your car is known to have a few issues but not a noise issue
If I may ask, Do you hear the noise if you are parked and you press the gas pedal?
No, I don't hear the noise when the car is parked and I press the gas pedal.
OK First I'd like to advise that firestone is not a place to be diagnosing complicated transmission noises.
I would definitely get a second opinion before investing money into this issue. Is there a toyota dealership close by?
yes, there is a toyota dealership close by
I would stop by the dealership and have them take a look even though you will pay a diagnosis fee. If the dealership confirms it's a transmission issue you want to get multiple quotes for a transmission before you do anything. And if you are not doing the repair at the dealership you'd want to consult a transmission specialist like AAMCO in your area and not firestone.
I have my doubts about the noise being from the transmission however without hearing the noise I can't really tell for sure.
How many miles does your rav4 has?
OK Does the transmission shift properly?
yes it does, but i did notice when I drove to recently to the foothill of a mountain, my car doesn't climb as well and it was hard to
keep up to the speed
OK That is likely related to the issue. Honestly without hearing the noise and driving the vehicle I couldn't tell you something and be sure about it. But what I can tell you for sure is that you don't want to spend 3100 dollars in firestone. Take the vehicle to your local dealership. Have them take a look and give you a second opinion here. The transmission in your car is common to have a hard shifting issue caused by a faulty computer but not a noise and slow acceleration. That's why you'd want a qualified mechanic to drive the car, listen to the noise and diagnose the issue accordingly
If I may, Can ask you a few more questions about the issue?
Thank you. So the noise starts as soon as the vehicle starts moving correct?
no not as soon as the vehicle starts moving. The car sounds normal when I start driving it, I hear the noise after press the gas pedal to go faster than say 40 mph
OK Does the noise go away if you let go of the gas pedal?
yes it does
OK Does the noise change if you are making turns?
I don't hear the noise when I'm making turns
Do you if your rav4 is 2wd or 4wd?
OK Thank you. The noise does sound like it is coming from the drivetrain but a more thorough inspection is needed. Basically the way we inspect issues like this one is to have someone sit in the car then we lift the car up and listen to the noise while the person in the car basically drives the vehicle to that speed to duplicate the noise while we listen.
I mean sometimes a loose exhaust shield could cause a noise like this, so without really listening to the vehicle while lifted there's no accurate way to determine this
ok, I understand. I guess I will have to take it into the toyota dealers to have them inspect the car. Thanks, XXXXX XXXXX your help.
You're welcome. Did you have any other questions for me at this time?
one more question, is the drivetrain part of the transmission and is it expensive to repair?
The drivetrain is basically the transmission, engine and axles. Or basically what drives the car or what moves the car.
The most expensive part to repair in your car would be the transmission, so that is the worst case scenario here
ok, guess it will be expensive to repair. might be time to get a new car. Thank you for your help.
A positive rating for my input would be greatly appreciated.
