Customer Question

I just replaced the bank 2 oxygen sensor on my 2001 Toyota Highlander and the check engine light went out for a few days. It just came back on with a PO 174 code when I ran CarMD. I did print the full report and have it available to forward to you if that would be of help.

Hello!

My name isCustomerXXXXX I can assist you with your question.

Are you saying that you are having an issue with this P0174 code constantly popping up in the computer?

How does the engine run? Does it idle ok? How does it accelerate?

Customer replied 258 days and 11 hours ago.

The car seems to run fine. No idling problems, hesitation or stumbling on acceleration. The check engine light went out after I replaced bank 2 oxygen sensor a couple of weeks ago, but the reappeared after a few days and is staying on with the OBD code I mentioned.

Hello!

This code is just a lean code on bank 2. Not an o2 sensor code. Bank 2 is the radiator side of the engine or towards the front of the vehicle.

Check freeze frame on the scanner. If both bank fuel trims were reading significantly high positive numbers, then chances are you just have a bad mass air flow sensor.

If the freeze frame for bank 1 was reading ok when this happened, then I would suspect a valve timing issue or an air or a vacuum leak on bank two only. Maybe the timing belt jumped a tooth on bank two as well.

Customer I am a bit puzzled. When I consulted another mechanic on JustAnswer about the oxygen sensor report on bank 2 several weeks ago I was told that bank 2 was the side closest to the windshield. Did I replace the wrong o2 sensor?

Cylinders 1,3 and 5 are the cylinders closest to the windshield.

Cylinders 2,4 and 6 are towards the front of the vehicle.

Bank 1 is always the side of the engine that has the number 1 cylinder. So in your case, bank one is the side closest to the windshield and bank 2 is towards the front of the vehicle.

Thanks.

I double checked your question history.

The last time you had a question about a code in your vehicles computer it was for a P0171 code. Not a P0174 code.

P0171 is a lean code on bank 1

P0174 is a lean code on bank 2
