Customer Question

I am in the middle of a 2005 Sienna Timing Belt Job. I set the belt to TDC. Then Per the instruction I rotated the Crankshaft 60 degrees counter clockwise. When I removed the tensioner and then the cam gears both rotated. The right or front when back to TDC and the left or firewall side when counter clockwise about 90degrees. The question I have
is since this is an interference engine can I rotate the Cams independently back to TDC.
and can I move the Crankshaft back to TDC. The Cams dont rotate easily.

Country: United States
Make: Toyota
Model: Sienna
Year: 2005
Engine: 3.30

Already Tried:
Timing belt off but have not installed new until I can get the TDC reset.

Hello and thank you for choosing just answer,

You can rotate the cams individually but if you feel resistance STOP and do not force it, If the valve touches the face of the piston you will feel resistance and at this point no damage is done, do not force it though.

I hope you have a genuine toyota timing belt. If you do then life is much easier, Look on the belt, you will see two solid yellow lines and one dotted line, each one of the two solid lines mark up with the mark on the cam gear, and the dotted line lines up with the mark on the crank sprocket, Get a small needle nose vise grips to keep the belt from jumping from the cams while you set it on the crankshaft. if the 2 yellow lines line up with the marks on the cam gears and the dotted line lines up with the mark on the crank gear the timing is good regardless if you are in top dead center or not. Once you put the tensioner in make sure that you belt didn't jump and that all three lines are where they are supposed to be and you'll be good. Note that once you spin the engine the lines are irrelevant. If you want to double check, spin the engine 360 degrees after you put the crank pulley, set the crank pulley at 0 and see that the marks on the cam gears line up with the 2 notches on the cover. If they do then you're in good shape.

But I am getting resistance When Rotating the left cam it is not at TDC but the Right Cam is at TDC. So how do I get them in Sync.

Try moving the crank slightly then move the left cam to tdc and then back off the crank.
