I'v made an offer on 2008 4 runner with 88k miles for my daughter. I've been told that i should make sure the timing belt has been replaced. Is this an important consideration

Hello and thank you for choosing just answer.
It all depends what engine does the 4runner have. If is has a V6 then it has no timing belt. If it's a V8 then it has a timing belt and it should be replaced every 90,000 miles. It is more expensive that the average timing belt, You're looking at 500+ to replace it at least.
If the vehicle you are purchasing is in good shape then try to negotiate a price drop due to the timing belt being due in 2000 miles and being an expensive one to replace.
The timing belt is an important maintenance item, but it's not a deal breaker. You are buying a used vehicle and all used vehicles need some maintenance when you buy them.

i've been told it should be replaced at 90k. If it breaks it'll blowyour engine. i have a diesel engine in my boat in hawaii & i have to change mine. It's not an easy item to replace on toyota. Correct
That's true it's an interference engine. It should be replace at 90K but I've seen timing belts being good at 200K and i've seen them break at 50K so it's really a gamble when it comes to the timing belt, Ideal would be to change it every 90K since that's what toyota recommends.
It's not an easy belt on that V8. You have to remove the radiator, cooling fan and shroud and basically all the front of the engine to get to the timing belt. It's a very complicated and involved job to replace the timing belt in that engine to do at home. It is preferred to do it at a toyota dealership using genuine parts.
I can provide instructions to replace the timing belt if you'd like to see what's involved and see if you have tools and skills to change it yourself.
