Hello! I will assist you with your question and get your ANSWER!
I need just a little more info...
How much is max price you are willing to spend?
hopefully below 1500$
I am looking for a reliable used Toyota. I am located in Montreal. My need is for a simple small vehicle. My usage is very light. Cost is a significant factor for me. Any and all input is most welcome. What? Where? How? What to look out for, to check for? etc. Where can I go to get a car assessed also? (My location is around the Snowdon area.) My thanks to you for taking the time to assist me with this. Please call at XXX-XXX-XXXX for a brief word together if this is possible. Appreciated.
Country: Canada
Make: Toyota
Model: echo/corolla/ other
Already Tried:
looking in listings in Montreal and getting a sense of difficulties with older vehicles that one needs to watch out for here. I would like a car with less mileage yet my budget puts me in the 200,000 km range and with cars about 15 years old. Parts are needing replacement. help please.
Do you dive in mostly city, would you like to include small suv in your search?
i am a rather petite size - i drive city almost entirely - 10 k here and there throughout residential neighbourhoods.
The corolla is a great car, I just purchased one on EBAY, it was located in Missouri,
I do not feel much use for an suv - perhaps you could explain some plusses - my baggage is not large - even my pet can sit in my hand or on my shoulder.
Give me a moment to pull up my database and I will get info for you,
my current is a used corolla, which is a reason I am looking this way again - a '92 with rather low mileage yet the muffler is gone and it is not worth investing - a lot of wear from the salt treatment of the roads in winter - also, I do not even need this size, so I am wondering about the echo also - it seems more pricey - i found one - i am looking for the data now - what questions need to be asked - always there is a little dent here or there and a cracked windshield for these less expensive options! I did put a lot of work into the vehicle that I bought - I am hopeful about this one where the fellow says that there were oil rust-proofing treatments for a number of years, so that the rust on the bottom may be not so bad. What about the little side bump from someone, is there something that they are trying to cover up - here is the data, not even knowing if the vehicle is sold already -
2001 Toyota Echo Avec Pneu D'hiver Neufs - 1900$ Négociable (said would go down to 1500$)
Kilometers 205000Body Type Coupe (2 door)Car in good condition, nothing to fix. Oil change (synthetic) has just been made, new winter tires (I did 1000 km in January 2011) on rim with hubcap just been laid. Comes with 4 summer tires (good for another summer) to 14''mag Snowflake. Windshield cracked, but does not obstruct the view, light hit and run''''on the driver's side rear fender (see photo). ''There is a hidden hitch''put on the back to put a bike rack. In air conditioning, but needs a filling.
what are the chances the a/c works - how to check this out
what papers should I try to get?
I am sharing this one since I favour the Echo option, but there are a few other toyotas that I have my eye on :
1. TOYOTA COROLLA BLEU 180,000 KM A VENDRE 1200$ NEGO!
Title, Bill of Sale, any previous repair history or accidents,
Year 1996Kilometers 180000Body Type Coupe (2 door) BLUE SEA 1996 TOYOTA COROLLA 4 DOOR, WITH HEATER, 4 new winter tires, NEW WIPER, 4 summer tires NEW, VERY VERY CLEAN, brake line and fuel refurbished RADIATOR2 bunch of keys ...... wipers-summer-winter .... nine new radiator new battery, GRReceipt as proof.$ 1,200 NEGOTIABLE
If you can get a toyota above 1998 with reasonable mileage that is in fair condition, will be good deal, for $1500.00
I find this second description a little scattered. I believe this car has some rust underneath. Why did the rad need to be refurbished?
You are probably right,
I came across a Corolla 98 with 240K and a Corolla 97 with 220K
They are less expensive in Canada,
prices 15G and 13G
what is reasonable mileage? some are up towards 300K - not really my ideal I think
That is a little high in mileage
I would stay around 200000
so there is a 96 corolla with 180 at 1200$ +/-
the 98 and 97 sound like they would be good to check into
and a 2001 echo coupe 2 door for 1500$
I priced here recently and a 2000 corolla with 100,000 miles $5000
newer is better?
I like the echo, yes newer is better with toyota,
The echo will get great gas mileage,
here is a link for the echo: http://montreal.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-cars-trucks-2001-Toyota-Echo-Avec-Pneu-Dhiver-Neufs-1900-Negociable-W0QQAdIdZ333800046

I translated the french description above -
yes, small dent, otherwise very nice, I like silver it seems to stay cleaner,
You can see the vehicle here and the scratch / dent over the fuel input - 5th picture
yes,
give me a little time and i will check some out and compare these that you have listed,
the corolla link - let me share it with you -

the condition is a little rough
i think it may have been road hard
i am checking the site to see the new additions - it is staggering - every few minutes a new offering and then snatched up - who knows if these are really still there - yet i have some arrangements with these two.
now one in needing a muffler - do i need this headache -
here is one - poor picture -

maybe could get it close to the echo price of 1500
I wonder about the difference in size and the benefit of the other 2 doors - I do not think it is a big deal with me not to have them although I do sometimes have call for back seat passengers, yet not so regularly
which would be more expensive to run, vis a vis fuel efficiency - are they relatively equal?
I am going to peruse a few more - what are your thoughts Tyrone up to now?
here's a lark - do I want one with a hip a bit crushed?

How do I check it out? This is very important and an area where you can really be of help -
[I almost went for a baby blue corolla yesterday but wanted to have inspected and was put off - as it had a bit of a hole in the exhaust apparently]
ARE YOU THERE TYRONE?
here is one at 300 K that needed - Break neufs. Ligne d'exaust neuve de 1 an. Un peu de rouille de surface ...- new brakes, exhaust line, has rust -

I guess you may have gone off to bed Tyrone - I am chatting to myself - oh well - wish I could take back much of the unnecessary ranging remarks above - as you can see - this is a pretty dilemma, yet it will be solved - SO THE MAIN QUESTION IS HOW TO EMPLOY AN EXTRA CAREFUL PROCEDURE SO THAT I DO NOT DISCOVER SHORTLY AFTER SOME UNEXPECTED DISASTER LOOMING?
HOW TO GET IT INSPECTED - WHAT NEEDS TO BE CHECKED - AND BY WHOM ?
TYRONE, YOU ARE BEING A BIG HELP, and I hope that we get to finish this conversation.
OPTIONS CURRENTLY FOR REVIEW ... I ask you to please excuse me Tyrone, but I suspect strongly that we have not finished off so here are the options - I do not know what the morrow will bring, but I wish to be able to NOT GET A lemon!!! Of course! How do I check all that needs to be checked? There are 2 lower figures and the rest are more or less the same. Do I assume that there is something truly wrong with the more affordable offers?
Here are the seven - A to G - the Echo we were looking at is B.

Well, I see that the A to G became all 1's - never mind -
The first listing is an automatic Tercel 97 with low mileage. 2 door.as is the Echo. The balance are 4 door.
I look forward to getting the distinct benefit of your considerate guidance. This is something which is beyond my modest capabilities.
If you could suggest your preferences, considering as if it were for a member of your own family, that you cared about, and had limited means at this time, please proceed with my great appreciation.
I look forward to your communication.
My thanks to you Tyrone.
Hello again! After looking at your other choices and some that I found the Toyota Echo has really stood out to me, It seems like a really great car,
The Toyota Echo is very reliable and gets great gas mileage.
Also for the driving you describe this little car will be great!
The price at $1500.00 is reasonable due to good condition of car.
The Echo came out in 2000, it is the newer version of Tercel, it will get 35-40 mpg easily.
As far as Safety results for the 2001 Toyota Echo Base 4dr Sedan crash rating is very good.
Good morning Tyrone
I just spoke to the Dealer regarding the '99 Corolla at a considerably lesser price. He says that the car is in good condition - a little rust only - and to come this morning. Would you recommend looking into it..
http://montreal.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-cars-trucks-1999-Toyota-Corolla-Berline-auto-W0QQAdIdZ334369955
(Hope that you are having some refreshment.)
Excuse me, I had a urgent call.and had to interrupt myself.
This car is 2/3 the price of the other and from a Dealer - a couple years older, less kilometrage - 20 000 less.
If you would rather spend less, then maybe corolla,
Good morning. Are we both here?
Yes, Good Morning!
What are pros and cons besides the price please.
The body rust will need to be looked at,
The corolla has more room interior, will get less MPG,
The kilometers are not enough to matter between year models, the Echo is 2 years newer, less time on the road.
Naturally - the dealer was rather gruff - I feel like calling for clarification, I guess. He is being inundated with lots of calls. I would like to be confident but do not feel I am getting much cooperation on that side.
Probably a good sign to let it go,
Sounds like the Echo has its benefits. The interior room is ok balanced with the lower (hopefully) running cost. If I want to resell, it should hold some of its value, but there is the ding and the (?) minor windshield crack - which I hear a lot of - happens a lot. I can call the wife and check how she finds it to be, to get a bit more clarity on this.
Yes, the Echo resale is very good,
Re the Dealer, I wonder why the car is not asking more - the price seems out of range a bit.
That was my thoughts also, maybe a bit more rust , some peoples( little) is more than others
I just got a nice call for the http://montreal.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-cars-trucks-1999-Toyota-Corolla-CE-W0QQAdIdZ334428615 and he will go down to 1550$ as opposed to $1800 ask. This is a CE 99 236000km with some add-ons. Poor picture.
It is above my limit, but only by $50.
It says color is pink, does that mean champagne or silver?
Pink must be champagne. I am trying to review it and will call and ask a couple questions - do you think ?
Yes, photo was blurry,
any specific questions to suggest as I try to call, Tyrone (beautiful name!)
Thank You!
Engine performance, past issues mechanically, previous accidents, rust, why are you selling?
Abdel just bought the car from a mid-aged lady - he buys and resells. The picture is not actual, it is a similar car. The car is truly good, no problems.
He has driven it - just having it a short period of time. He says 2 weeks.
Sounds good enough to check into,
I imagine that this car is more expensive to run? What is the business with the CE, with the larger 1.8 liter ? engine please.
The reliability is equal to ECHO, you just lose the extra MPG, gain the interior room and larger engine, the CE is interior and trim pkg,
how do the mpg compare please.
I guess that this is also an important consideation to me.
Corolla is 28-32, Echo is 35-40
consideration
so - 3 to 4 ratio or 30% more at the pump?
20 to 25% more expensive fuel-wise for the larger vehicle, probably more correctly.
Yes, approximately ,
The ECHO will be unmatched on fuel economy,
You have to get hybrid to match ECHO,
I guess that I can try to go see it. The other car is for evaluation only tomorrow, I believe. There is the question of the screen crack. Do you think that these type of considerations should matter much.
How much is fuel per gallon there?
Windshield cracks can get larger with changing temps,
! 1.35 per liter
That is $5 per gallon, my fuel is $3 per gallon, I have Toyota 4Runner, 22MPG
The crack is 2 years along the base of the windshield, but not obscuring at all the driver;s side. No change reported for the 2 years.
Sounds good,
The fuel adds up fast!
Yes,
The Echo has not so much in the way of rust. http://montreal.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-cars-trucks-2001-Toyota-Echo-Avec-Pneu-Dhiver-Neufs-1900-Negociable-W0QQAdIdZ333800046 to review pics.
The pics are very nice,
so now it seems between 2 at the same price more or less - one pink CE'99/236000; one silver Echo'01/205000 with a ding and a crack and a touch of rust. Not an easy choice.
Right, I would pick ECHO, I love the color and MPG,
Seems that I should try to visit the pink one and take a couple of pics and check it out. It is not so far.
Yes, that would help,
Can I follow up further with you please here a bit later if I do that.
It's a plan then, tentatively.
I should check with my insurer and see what the difference might be also.
Okay, Good Luck!
If I am slow to get moving, I may post another thought or so. Thank you very very!
No problem,
I have a call in from the entry earlier without photo - Tercel'97/189000 just 2 small rust on the door - needs 2 new brakes soon - $1500 (would be asking more but thought to be easier) - car always in the family - carefully driven - http://montreal.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-cars-trucks-1997-Toyota-Tercel-Sedan-W0QQAdIdZ334302208
insurance ranges from around $300 for the Tercel to about $450 for the Echo if fire&theft is included - minor difference I guess.
(Now it is at $200 only for this item)
A lot to consider, Mpg, ins,
How is Tercel stacking up in mpg for '97 - I just got a reply from the other Tercel - somewhat negotiable - say to $1300 - good condition - bought car from a lady 2 years ago at 177000k now at 195000k. moving away. when bought, got new timing belts, replaced clutch in the spring, front brakes in the summer, radiator (why does this come to need replacement?), few spots rust (not much) not underside, engine ok http://montreal.kijiji.ca/c-ViewAdLargeImage?AdId=334356811
Tercel is very similar to ECHO,MPG etc,
looks bigger!
Pictures not showing up on mine, is it 4 door,
http://montreal.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-cars-trucks-1997-Toyota-Tercel-Sedan-W0QQAdIdZ334356811
yes, 4 door
You can see the picture
yes, it looks nice,
How would you rate it Tyrone next to the Echo?
Seems I now have on deck 1 echo 1 corolla ce 2 tercel; relatively 2001 '99 and 2 97s; 205, 236, 195 and 189 000K
yes, all are good choices,
They keep rolling in. I want to go see the CE soon. In the meantime, re the Echo NB NB the engine light is on - the dealer says that it is something concerning pollution, for the air, and that it is not a problem (whatsoever) Is this correct please Tyrone? It does not need anything soon. 2 months back, got a new starter. It gets 500 km per $ 40 fill-up. A rock hit the windshield a year and a half ago and there is a crack along the base of the windshield.
Here is a new possibility: http://montreal.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-cars-trucks-1999-Toyota-Tercel-Sedan-automatique-aucune-rouille-1250-00-W0QQAdIdZ333299682
This vehicle is in excellent mechanical condition and body. Automatic Transmission 8 tires, no rust, very good buy is only $ 1250.00
From a Dealer
Oh ho! Tested! That's a trick! Tyrone, I wonder how I could pull that off!
I am sending you a view of the CE. "I am sleeping on it."
I do not know how well you are able to see these collaged pictures.
I believe the LOWER IMAGE is intended to be viewed FIRST.
This is the 236000km 1999 Corolla CE in its unwashed glory to be had at $1550. Bells and whistles. Showing wear. Character - the expected amount of denting, rust, bubbling, a crack here or there and a wrinkle.
Refresher on the bells and whistles is here. Please let me know if it is possible at all to view the collaged assembly of views. They show the encroachment of rust, somewhat imperfect interior, and other views. Nevertheless, to be considered a reasonable value pending your response. Oh ho! car for sale 1999 Toyota Corolla CE auto, clean, A1 Mechanical, very economical 1.8L nothing has changed, runs very well, no rust winter tires are dejas Installed -Air conditioning Remote-smith cruise-control of electric door anti-demareur -RadioFM, CD Price $ 1800 just Neg!
Please let me know your thoughts. I truly hope that you are having a fine day and that my request for your guidance is well taken.
You are looking very nice in your picture. I imagine that in person you are more so. Tyrone :)
Oh my! Do I like creating collages! Contemplating ... what would be needed to preserve this vehicle and to beef it up? The upholstery including floor and ceiling interior needs a thorough wash and some discrete patching of cigarette burn holes. How to retain the exterior paint? Scrape it down and refresh - I don't know what you do when it starts rusting and bubbling and commencing pealing ... how is this managed? Full repaint? The tire assemblies are somewhat makeshift. Is this standard? I cannot assess the appearance of the engine - the car drove okay around the block, but it was not a proper test drive. The bells and whistles appear to function fine. The seller is a purchaser and reseller that did a few vehicles this week. His standards are lenient, yet he appears to appreciate a good Corolla. He shows flexibilibility in lowering his ask, yet I do not know what to make of this - perhaps he had over-valued it, or maybe no. I did not see under the vehicle per se yet.
I do hope that you return and have a few moments to reflect to me your impression of the CE, etc.
TYRONE
Do you think that I may be able to have your review of how the Corolla CE looks or no?
Please advise.
You are peeking in yet there is not any reaction forthcoming as yet.
Please advise if you will be coming back and telling me what you see, how it appears from your trained eye. Or not, coming back. Or what it is that you would like to find here that you might be missing. ... Your help is required at this important juncture. Please.
no longer are you 'initializing as now you are 'offline
I may be left out here - please DO let me know if so. And thank you very much in the meantime.
I see that you are initializing - perhaps I will hear from you.
Re the Echo engine light, the word is that it is the 'Evap System' for the pollution, checked by the dealer a month or two ago, and does not represent a problem. Does this ring true to you please, Tyrone? I understand that it is simply a matter of testing if by computer. Kindly confirm if true. .... Do let me know if I have offended you in some way, shape or manner. I ask you to accept my apologies if so, as not intended.
So I guess that you are not pleased at all.
What am I supposed to do?
Seems like I can just go take a walk? Very very sorry. Since I wish real advice, I guess that I have run out of ... Excuse me as I do not have any experience in this sort of matter and I think that you are showing signs of fatigue.

Yes the Evap is not real significant,Yes pics will be great!
