Resolved Question:

the cigarette lighter in my car has not been plugged in for quite some time, rust has been building up inside the socket. now that I need it for my GPX, I have to get that rust out. how do I do that?

If the lighter socket is corroded to that point is going to be virtually impossible to clean it so that it works efficiently. Your best bet is to order a new socket from the dealer and just have it replaced. There is an accessory plug also that you can use instead of the cigarette lighter plug.
