After my 83-year-old aunt had a stroke 2 years ago, she was diagnosed with Type 2
diabetes. Her doctor prescribed 500mg of metformin a day and has been checking her
blood sugar every 3 months. It's been slightly elevated in the past 6 months, but he
didn't think it was enough to make a change. This past week, however, her blood sugar
was 206 and her A1C was 7.6, so her doctor increased the metformin to 1000 mg a day
and advised her to cut back on sweets. For the past few days she said she's been having
a "nervous" feeling in her stomach that seems to disappear after she eats something.
She never experienced this when taking the 500mg. I'm just wondering if this is a
normal side effect when the metformin dosage is increased. I will also add that other
than the elevated blood sugar, her other blood work is excellent, and even though
she still suffers effects of the stroke, the doctor is pleased with her health overall.
Thank you for any feedback you can give on the increased metformin!
  • (Nov. 26) Potassium level tested 3. Prescribed 8meq potassium

(Nov. 26) Potassium level tested 3. Prescribed 8meq potassium chloride 1-2 times per day. Could only take one per day because of side effects. She cannot get rid of the gas because of a short colon. Tested Dec. 5 and was 5.1. Both tests were done in the emergency room.
Was told to take 8meq every other day till she saw her regular doctor. She saw him Dec. 9 and was tested at his lab.- results 3.6. Tested again Dec. 15 at his lab and no potassium pills taking since Dec. 8 - results 4.3.
This week she has been under tremendous stress. She had it checked again at emergency room - results 3.0.
She was told to take 1 8meq every other day until she saw a doctor.
She cannot tolerate this dosage because of extreme pain and gas and bloating. She cannot pass gas.- Bloating so bad that it restricts breathing.
She has tried all different potassium pills made and this is the only one that she can barely live with.
Can she get by taking only 1 per week with a high potassium diet or avoid the stress and
    take none?
