Tracfone Problems

Older models of Tracfone cell phones generally do not require SIM cards as they operate on a completely different network. However the current Tracfone cell phones can take designated SIM cards which are relatively unique to the normal SIM cards. These are typically bound or locked to the serial number of the original Tracfone. Therefore it cannot be removed to be exchanged from one Tracfone to another. Additionally the level and type of technology used in Tracfone cell phones make it quite difficult to “unlock” them. Hence it may not be possible for them to work with other service providers.

What is the process to transfer and activate an old Tracfone cell phone number to a new cell phone?

To activate a new Tracfone cell phone and transferring your existing number a form is available online on the following link: activation form. Once here, the option “Transfer my number and service from one Tracfone to another” should be selected. It will provide a list of instructions which need to be followed. I If the transfer process has been completed, it could take two business days to complete request. Hence, there is a possibility that the number could have already been transferred but it is taking time for it to get processed.

What should be done if a new Tracfone as well as a used (2 years old) phone is displaying “unregistered SIM” message?

On a new Tracfone, an “unregistered SIM” message usually appears if the Tracfone has not been activated yet. If the Tracfone activation procedure has been completed, the actual process can take anywhere between a few minutes to 24 hours. Hence after activation, it is advisable to wait for a minimum of 24 hours for the phone to get activated. This message can be disregarded as it should disappear once the Tracfone is activated. What should be done if the Samsung Tracfone is able to make calls but unable to receive them?

In such a scenario, the following actions can be taken. The battery and the SIM card (if present) of the Tracfone cell phone needs to be removed. After waiting for 20 seconds, with the battery remaining out, the Tracfone cell phone can be plugged into the wall charger. After this, the battery and SIM card can be replaced and the Tracfone cell phone can be turned on. If the problem persists, it could be a SIM related issue. 1. The left soft key should be pressed to access “Menu” to select “Settings and “Reset Settings”
