Military Life Insurance

Members of the military and their families are protected by various benefits like insurance, death gratuity, survivor benefits, etc. Life insurance is one such benefit that is provided to service members. It is important for people who are in the military or related to military personnel to understand the different features and know their rights if they qualify for military life insurance. Given below are some of the most commonly asked questions that have been answered by the Experts about military life insurance policies.

Would a deceased military personnel’s parents receive the benefits of the Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (SGLI) even if the was married?

SGLI insurance may be paid to the people who are listed as beneficiaries on the military personnel’s policy. Hence, if the parents are listed as beneficiaries, they may receive the benefits even if the deceased officer was married.

Will the spouse get military retirement benefits on the death of the individual?

In most situations, an individual’s military retirement benefits may end on their death. However, if the deceased individual wants to extend the benefits for their survivors after their death, they may obtain the survivor’s benefit plan. The individual may have to pay for this insurance plan and list their survivors as beneficiaries.

Would a service member’s beneficiaries receive their insurance benefits if they committed suicide?

A service member’s beneficiaries may receive their insurance benefits even if they commit suicide.

Can the civilian spouse retain an individual’s military insurance benefits on divorce?

A civilian spouse of military personnel may be able to retain insurance benefits on divorce provided they were married for 20 years, the individual served for a period of 20 years and there was an overlap of 20 years between the marriage and the service.

Where can an individual apply for service members’ group life insurance?

An individual may apply for service member’s group life insurance on the following link: http://www.insurance.va.gov/SGLIsite/forms/8283-Bene-01-2011.pdf

Is an insurance company obligated to provide information about a military officer’s policy beneficiaries?

An insurance company may not be obligated to provide information about a military officer’s beneficiaries to anyone. The only obligation that they might have is to pay the listed beneficiaries on the death of the officer. If anyone wants to know who the beneficiaries were, he/she may have to sue the company and force them to give the information. The deceased person’s military record may also have a copy of the policy. Another way to get the information would be to request for a copy of the policy.

On what basis would benefits be distributed if no beneficiaries were listed on a Service Member’s Group Life Insurance Policy?

If a beneficiary is not specified on a Service Member’s Group Life Insurance Policy, then the benefits may be distributed first to the spouse. In the absence of the spouse, it may be distributed to the children, parents, administrator of the individual’s will and next of kin in that order of priority.

It is important for you to understand the legal aspects of military life insurance benefits if you are a member of the military or a family member of service personnel. Some of the features of these insurance policies may be complicated and difficult to understand. Lack of understanding about these benefits can leave you confused when you want to claim them.
