Hyperthyroidism in Dogs

What is hyperthyroidism in dogs?

Hyperthyroidism disease may be the excessive creation of thyroxine; this may be the thyroid hormone. This hormone may be the hormone that raises metabolism in a dog’s body. Normally the thyroid gland may make hormones to activate the pituitary gland. If a dog’s body is producing high quantities of hormones this could make the body work too hard. Which could make the dog’s metabolism to boost which could cause, weight loss, diarrhea, or anxiety and many other symptoms. For more information over hyperthyroidism in dogs such as, is there a cure for this disease, can hyperthyroidism cause death in a dog and will a dog suffer from pain due to hyperthyroidism. Questions like these and many others may be answered by an Expert.

Is it common for a dog to have hyperthyroidism and what could cause a dog to have hyperthyroidism?

Hyperthyroidism may not be very common for a dog to have; this disease may be more likely to be seen in cats. However if a dog does have hyperthyroidism, this would be very rare. Typically this condition in dogs may be caused by a thyroid tumor or thyroid adenocarcinoma. It may be a good to have the thyroid tested. In true cases of hyperthyroidism the TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) and T3 and T4 levels may be very high.

What are the most common symptoms of hyperthyroidism in dogs?

If a dog truly has hyperthyroidism there may be many different symptoms that could be seen. The symptoms may include but are not limited to, excessive urination; an increase in appetite, the dog may lose weight even while eating more, diarrhea, weakness, looking for cool areas. In some cases the kidneys may be affected, but may not be noticed due to the hyperthyroidism, an increase of blood pressure. If the hyperthyroidism is resolved this may be when to kidney problems may start to show. In some cases the heart may be affected this may depend on how severe the hyperthyroidism.

What are some treatments for hyperthyroidism in dogs?

Normally hyperthyroidism may be rare in dogs, but there may be some cases where this may occur. Typically there are 3 different treatments for hyperthyroidism such as, medical, surgical, or radioactive iodine treatment. If the dog is older usually the safest treatment may by medical or iodine treatment. The surgical may be too risky for dogs that are older, due to a low immune system.

Is there a certain age that a dog would be more likely to get hyperthyroidism?

Hyperthyroidism in dogs may be very rare for a dog to contract. Hyperthyroidism is where the thyroid produces too much hormones. It may be more possible for a dog to have hypothyroidism which is the lack of hormones. With both of these conditions there may not be a certain age where a dog would be more susceptible to getting these diseases.

Hyperthyroidism may typically be very rare to be seen in a dog, but may be possible. Many dog owners may never have heard of this disease due to how rare it is seen. However there are some cases of hyperthyroidism which may concern some dog owners and they may have questions such as, how hyperthyroidism is tested or can a dog die if not treated for hyperthyroidism. These questions may be answered by an Expert.
