Gas Stove Problems

Gas stoves are typically divided into 2 categories – cooking stoves and gas stove heaters to which are used to heat the home. Because of the amount of use that a gas stove has in the average home, problems occasionally arise. Among the most common problems are the flame does not ignite, the flame keeps going off, insufficient heat production and gas leakage. Many times a home or business owner will ask questions related to these issues. Answers to these and many other questions on gas stove problems have been given by Experts on JustAnswer.

A burner on my gas stove does not ignite, I think it needs cleaning, please tell me the correct way to go about this.

This is one of the most common gas stove problems. Burners need to be cleaned regularly because the soot and sediment that collects in them restricts the gas flow causing ignition problems. Remove the cap from the burner and look inside to spot what seems to be a brass nut with a hole in it. Push a wire or straightened paper clip down the hole to clear it out. If the burner still does not ignite, check to see if there is a spark when you turn on the stove. If there is no spark, the spark module may need replacement. If there is a spark but no ignition, the burner head may need replacement.

The pilot light on my Dovre gas stove is on, but when the thermostat is on, there is no ignition. What could be the cause?

This problem is commonly caused by a weak thermopile. To test the thermopile you will need a multi meter. Set it to voltage meter and to DC voltage millivolts. On the gas control valve there should be 3 terminal marked “TP” “TH” and “TH/TP”. Put one lead of the multi meter on the TP terminal and one on TH/TP. With the thermostat turned off you should get a reading of over 300 millivolts. To get consistent ignition you need around 350 millivolts. If the reading is low you can try cleaning the pilot assembly and if that does not work, the thermopile may need replacement.

After about 20 minutes of running the flame and pilot light of my Jotul Classic 3 gas stove shuts off. What is the problem?

A likely cause is a failure to maintain a cold junction which is the area on the thermocouple below where it is heated by the pilot flame. If a stray flame is heating the bottom of the thermocouple, the cold junction is lost and no voltage flows resulting in the pilot light and burners shutting down. Check for a stray flame that may be caused by a crack in the logs or some gravel deflecting the flame. Another possibility is that the vent safety switch is blocked.

I have an old Tappan 36 gas stove with a griddle in the center. I have been told it is producing high levels of carbon dioxide because the flame is orange colored. How can I fix this?

If the flame is orange in color it usually means that the air shutter on the burner manifold needs to be adjusted. It appears that the adjustment may be closed. You will find the adjustment on the manifold where it connects to the opening. There will usually be a screw that you can loosen to open the air shutter which should give you a blue flame.

I have an old Vermont Casting Stardance SNV30 natural vent gas stove. Last night I turned the switch off (the pilot was on) before going to sleep but in the morning found that the control knob and igniter button had melted. What should I do?

This could be a dangerous situation. The first thing to do is shut off the gas supply using the shut off valve which will be outside the stove. The likely causes of this are a leaking seal on the control knob shaft, a broken diaphragm in the valve or a leak in the gas line. These should not be repaired. Replacement is the safest option.

Because it runs on gas and uses open flames, a gas stove must be well maintained to prevent any accidents or injuries. When doing gas stove troubleshooting and repairs, follow the instruction in the owner’s manual. If this does not resolve the problem of if the issue is not covered in the manual, it is advisable to get the help of experts on gas stove repairs to get the problem resolved.

  • Just switched over from oil fired steam to gas fired steam

Just switched over from oil fired steam to gas fired steam on a Peerless boiler w/hot water coil (8 gallons per minute). This install was done yesterday and since I'm unfamiliar with how this thing should operate I have a few questions. First, the Carlin EZ unit was setup to deliver 100K BTU's per hour. The house is about 1500 square feet and there are 10 radiators. The efficiency test done right after the install is 85.5%. All day the unit has been running for about 3 minutes every 15 minutes and the thermostat set at 72F. Outside temp has ranged throughout the day from between 33F and 37F. Does this sound right to you?
Also, the unit starts up first with a blower for about 25 seconds and then fires up. When it stops making heat the blower stays on for another 25 seconds before shutting down. Does this sound like it's functioning properly.

Went ahead and replaced the thermocouple...to no avail...still does not light when I follow the relighting directions ( turn to the red switch to pilot, press down and hold, light.....nada. Was working fine before I decided to be industrious and clean. What am I missing?
