US Embassy Questions

The US Embassy plays an important role for US citizens who travel or live abroad. The Embassy is the diplomatic contact between the United States and a foreign country. Employees of the US Embassy work to handle conflicts, assist and observe political tensions within a foreign country, as well as help find resolutions on issues between a host country and the country of origin. Embassy employees also help travelers that run into problems while visiting the host country. Take a look at the questions below regarding the US Embassy and other Embassy questions that have been answered by Experts.

If someone has is dating an individual who entered the United States illegally, and returned to Mexico in December, and they are working on getting a visa to come here. Is there anything I could do for them here in the US?

To begin the process, citizen spouse must submit a visa petition. The visa petition can be submitted to the United States Citizenship Immigration Service (USCIS) that has jurisdiction over his/her residence or the petition can be submitted to the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in the foreign country where the foreign born spouse lives. There will be a filing fee for the visa petition.

If the visa petition is approved, the National Visa Center in Portsmouth, New Hampshire will send the foreign-born spouse a packet. The packet contains information on which documents will be required (medical exams, passport, police clearance, etc.). Also in the packet are documents that must be filled out, signed, and sent to the U.S. Embassy or Consulate abroad.

Once all of the information has been submitted, the foreign spouse will be interviewed and generally granted an immigrant visa in 3-6 months. There will be a fee from the State Department for the immigrant visa.

If an American citizen was to get into trouble in Nigeria, could they get help from the American embassy?

Usually, the US Embassy will sometimes help a person with getting a new passport. The US Embassy generally doesn't assist people with legal issues and a person cannot pay the Embassy to assist them. With the ever growing scams that have been operating in and out of West Africa, the police should be notified if you are involved in this type of situation. Many of the scams involve a person making a connection with someone in the US and later asking for money for one reason or another.

I went to the US embassy today in Kingston Jamaica and was refused a non-immigrant visa. The reason is that my spouse needs to file for me. I was not given a chance to speak and I don't want to live in the US, I only want to visit my spouse who is a citizen. What can I do?

Usually, when the US Embassy or Consulate refuses a person a visitor's visa, it is based on the belief that the person requesting the visa has intentions of overstaying or trying to remain in the country as an illegal alien. If your spouse is a US citizen, they would need to file for a Change of Status form through the US Immigration Service if your goal was to remain in the states. There doesn't appear to be a reason for them to deny your visa and requiring your spouse to file for you. It appears that maybe you received incorrect information from someone at the Embassy. Maybe the person was unclear on the procedure when issuing a visa. You should return to the Embassy and ask to speak to someone other than the person who gave you this information. If you receive the same information, avoid any more clerks and demand to speak to the person in charge of the office. If you are told that there is no one else to speak with or they are not in the office at this time, simply smile and tell them you will wait for their return. You will be amazed at how quick someone will be found to speak with you and issue your Visitor's Visa.

Many people never give the US Embassy a second thought. However, if you travel abroad or are planning a marriage with a foreigner, you will become acquainted with the Embassy. It is important to understand the roll of the US Embassy if you are going to be in a foreign country. Your answers can best be answered if you ask an Expert.
