Hi, my name is ***** ***** I can help. As long as your mother is your dependent, you can claim her long-term care expenses as a medical deduction, to the extent that you paid them. Even if she is not your dependent, according to IRS Pubication 502 (found here: https://www.irs.gov/publications/p502/ar02.html#en_US_2015_publink1000178858)

You can include medical expenses you paid for an individual that would have been your dependent except that:

  1. He or she received gross income of $4,000 or more in 2015,

  2. He or she filed a joint return for 2015, or

  3. You, or your spouse if filing jointly, could be claimed as a dependent on someone else's 2015 return

I hope this answers your question. Please let me know if I can clarify anything or answer any additional questions.

Thanks, Jonathan
