My husband received a check for $2900 and about $800 was taken

My husband received a check for $2900 and about $800 was taken out in taxes. Does this sound normal for a married man in California? It seems really high to me.

Hello and thanks for trusting me to help you today. I am a tax adviser with over 15 years of experience.
28% would seem high but the check he received and why would put more light onto the situation.
If this was a regular payroll check then depending on what he entered on his W4 would set the amount to withhold. If this was a bonus check then the higher amount would be reasonable because the withholding on bonus payments would not be set by the W4.
