An individual incurs legal fees to ensure he receives the proper amount from his recently deceased mother's estate. Are the legal fees deductible?

Legal fees are tricky in the way that they are allowed if the amount is taxable to you.
If this was legal for contesting a will then no. That would be personal expense and not allowed unfortunately.
