Institutions and organizations, such as hospitals,schools, churches and cultural institutions, mayqualify for an exemption from local taxes on realand personal property they own. Ownership doesnot automatically entitle an organization to anexemption, however. This brochure explains thegeneral criteria that must be met and proceduresthat must be followed for an exemption to begranted.
The board of assessors in each city or town isresponsible for administering property taxexemptions. Exemptions are granted by theassessors according to Massachusetts law.
An organization seeking a charitable exemption forpersonal property, or a particular parcel of realproperty, must make an initial application to thelocal board of assessors. Once an exemption isestablished for that property, no further applicationis required, provided there is no change inownership, occupancy or other eligibility criteria.Application forms are available at the assessors’office. The organization must provide whateverinformation is reasonably required to establisheligibility. If it is claiming exemption for the firsttime, or for property not previously exempt as a house ofworship or parsonage, it should contact the assessors’ officeand provide the information needed to establish exempt statusand have the property removed from the tax rolls.

Then you can probably just call the assessors office and tell them that it will continue to be a church, and that you wanted to be sure they had everything they need to keep it off the tax rolls
