This answer was rated:

I file my return jountly. We recently had a dispute over additional taxes. I ammended my return and the IRS said they accepted the ammended return and that I owed an addtional $557 in taxes. They then sent two additinal bills for me and my wife stating we each owed an additonal $557. How can this be and what should I do about those two addtional bills?

Robin D :

Hello and thank you for using Just Answer,

Robin D :

When you amended, did you change filing status?

Customer:

No

Robin D :

If you did not change filing status and it was still joint, the bills were sent to each of you because you were both on the amended return.

Robin D :

It does not mean that you each owe the $557 separately

Customer:

What should I do?

Robin D :

but together

Robin D :

Just pay the one amount then

Customer:

What should I do>

Robin D :

make sure to follow up with your local IRS office (or the one nearest you)

Robin D :

They can check on your balance and account and advise that the situation is closed

Customer:

Will do. Thanks.
