Can I claim my 2 minor grandchildren, who are on Welfare, on

This answer was rated:

Can I claim my 2 minor grandchildren, who are on Welfare, on my MA taxes? They do not reside with me but I have provided over half of their support.

Randalltax :

Thank you for your tax question.

Randalltax :

Are you claiming them on the federal return?

Randalltax :

Why are their parents not claiming them?

Customer:

I am claiming them on both state and federal return.

Customer:

I don't believe she made enough money as she only worked sporatically. She receives partial rent and daycare assistance(when she is working) and I'm not sure about food stamps.

Randalltax :

They may be claimed as dependents. You will not be eligible for the Earned Income Credit, if that is what you are after since they did not live with you more than half the year.

Customer:

Could you please explain "Earned Income Credit"?

Randalltax :

Is your income under $40K?

Customer:

No

Randalltax :

Then it will not apply in your case any way. It is for low income families only.

Customer:

So am I able to claim them on my taxes without impacting my daughter's welfare standing? She gave me permission to claim them.

Randalltax :

I can't comment on state welfare rules. Just taxes.

Customer:

Ok. Thank you anyway for your time.
