Customer Question

In filing through Turbo Tax, somehow I ended with a gross income of $48,770. I had to pay almost $1300 in taxes. The gross income was incorrect. The total is $41,297 gross.
My husband died 8/1/2011, so I filed as a couple. Don't know where I made the mistake
in filling out the form. When I asked turbo Tax , I was told to contact the IRS. Help :(

Robin D :

Hello and thank you for using Just Answer,
If you indeed made a mistake on the tax reporting then you will need to file a 1040X form to amend and correct the problem. It was fine that you filed a Married Filing Joint return for 2011, even though your husband pass away in 2011.
If you cannot find your own mistake to correct then you may have to go to a tax professional and have them first, check the return as filed an dthen complete the 1040X for you. The IRS is not going to fill out the 1040X. You will be issued a refund of any taxes that were paid incorrectly if you file the 1040X.

Robin D :

I wish I could tell you how to find the incorrect amount and where you went wrong but most tax preparation places will not charge you if they do not see a need to file the 1040X and if they do need to really complete the 1040X then you will be charged but you will be getting a refund.

Customer :

I should have realized I needed to refile. Not your fault , if I wasn't so frustrated, I should have realized what I needed to do. Sorry for wasting yours and my time. :(

Robin D :

You have not wasted my time. Just Answer is here so you can ask your question (even if you may think you know) so an expert in that specific field can confirm what you need to do.

Robin D :

We appreciate your postive ratings though because no answer is a waste

Customer :

Thanks for your help.

Robin D :
