Can I take a deduction pluss a standard deduction, filing single
Optional Information: State/Country relating to question: Ohio
Hi and welcome to Just Answer!
You may claim both - standard deduction AND personal exemption. If you are Single - on your 2011 tax return - you may claim standard deduction $5800 AND personal exemption $3700.
If that will be more beneficial for you - instead of the standard deduction - you may claim itemized deduction. The amount of itemized deduction include mortgage interest expenses, real estate and property taxes, state income taxes, charitable contributions, and some other deduction. If your total itemized deduction is more than $5800 - generally - you better itemize.
