I still owe over $23K for taxes from the year 2000. Isn't there a cut-off where it is considered uncollectible, or a statue for collections?
Optional Information: State/Country relating to question: California Already Tried: I tried a payment plan but they want too much!
Welcome, THANK YOU for using Just Answer. My goal is to help make your life...a little...LESS taxing. There is a 10 year statute of limitations on tax debt collection, but the statute periods starts running from the date of assessment. Example, you stated that you have past due taxes from TY 2000, if the IRS did not make an assessment until 2002 or 2003, this means that the statute of limitations will not expire until either this year 2012 or 2013. Also, note that if you did not file a return for that year and the IRS did an SFR (substitute for return), or if there was any fraudulent activity involved with that tax return, the statute of limitations does not apply. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance to you regarding this matter.Thank you again for using JUST ANSWER.
