We need to file amended tax returns (Fed and Minnesota), because we forgot to include a sizable expense in our original return and anticipate refunds. But, we expect to sell our Minnesota home within a couple of months, so want the refunds sent to our new Arizona address. We used TurboTax for our initial electronic returns, but TurboTax requires us to file amended returns by mail, advising us that refunds may require as much a 3 to 4 months. When I changed our mailing address on the amended returns to Phoenix, AZ it caused the instructions to tell us to send the Fed amended return to a San Francisco, CA address. Our original Fed return was sent to Cincinnati, OH and I'm concerned that sending the amended return to San Francisco will cause confusion and delay.I can re-enter TurboTax and change our address (which is our current residence) back to Minnesota, but, as stated earlier, we may never receive refunds, due to our anticipated move to Arizona. What do you advise?
Did you efile your original returns?
Unfortunately, yes, but the actual date for payment we selected via the TurboTax system is April 17. Because, both our Fed and State returns have been "accepted", we need to file amnded returns, according to TurboTax.
Just a note of clarification: Our current State of residence is Minnesota, not Arizona, as part of my original text implied.
Okay but since you e-filed your return. It's not at any one service center, it's available on line to anyone at any IRS office.
By the way, it's not Turbotax requiring you to paper file the 1040X, that's the IRS rules.
I would change your address and mail to the address that Turbotax is telling you. Like I said, it doesn't matter what service you send it to, so you should send it to the "right one"
In other words, the IRS won't be concerned about the address change. Is that correct?
I.e., we are OK to use our new Phoenix address for the amended returns, correct?
Correct and correct.
...
Thanks. I'll go ahead with all of the forms I've printed out ..... probably won't send them until after April 15.
