Have a Tax Question? Ask a Tax Expert
Since your son is over the age of 24, the only way you can claim him as a dependent is if all of the following rules can be met:
1. He does not have income of his own of more than $3,650 for the year.
2. You provide more than half of his support
3. He is not married filing a joint return with his spouse
4. He is not filing his own return and claiming himself as a dependent
If all of the above rules can be met, then you can claim your son as a dependent on your return.
