Recently we had to pay out of pocket expenses for my mothers

Customer Question

Recently we had to pay out of pocket expenses for my mothers funeral. Is any portion of that tax deductible?

Hello monday,

Unfortunately, funeral expenses are never deductible, regardless of who they are paid for.

Please refer to the following IRS publication under "Expenses Which Are Not Deductible" and then the topic of Funeral Expenses.

http://www.irs.gov/publications/p502/ar02.html#en_US_publink1000179050

I wish I could have given you better news on this. It's one deduction that I have always thought should be at least partially allowed, but unfortunately, as of this time you cannot claim any of those expenses.

If this was helpful please press the Accept button.

Thank you monday
