Our 24 year old daughter moved back in with us this year. She is unemployed and has just had a baby. Can we claim her and her daughter for this year on our income tax? We are her sole support
Country/State/Province of question: Texas Already Tried: nothing just getting started, need to know if possible and what paperwork would need to be done.
Hello willbonn, Since your daughter is now age 24, you would no longer be able to claim her under the qualifying child rules. But she may still qualify to be claimed as a dependent if all of the following rules can be met: 1. You provide more than half of her total support and 2. She does not have income of her own of more than $3,650 for the year 3. She is not married and filing a joint return with her spouse If all of the above rules can be satisfied, then you may claim your daughter as a dependent. She does not even have to live with you for you to claim the exemption as long as all 3 rules can be met. As far as your granddaughter, you may claim her as a qualifying child as long as she lives with you for most of the year and as long as she is not able to be claimed by someone else as a qualifying child. So if the mother or father do not claim the granddaughter, and the granddaughter lives with you for most of the year, you may also claim her as a dependent on your return. If this was helpful please press the Accept button. Positive feedback is also appreciated. Thank you willbonn and let me know if you have more questions.
