can a volunteer for a non-profit organization use their time as an in-kind donation?

You cannot deduct the value of time or services to a charitable organization, but you can deduct any hard costs associated with that volunteering, such as the gas or bus fare it costs to get there or you may take an allowance for mileage for personal use of your car. The IRS will let you deduct any out-of-pocket expenses you acquire in the course of volunteering, but not the value of your time. You can refer to IRS Publication 526 for full rules on charitable contributions.
