Have a Tax Question? Ask a Tax Expert
The best way to figure out what your tax liability will be is to go ahead and do your taxes. You can use one of the online filing programs and complete them. You do not have to pay until you print your return or file it electronically. This will give you a good idea of what you owe.
You should at least ask for an extension of the time to file.
You can do so by phone.
The IRS has a special toll-free phone line for extensions — 1-888-796-1074 — for those who filed a tax return for 2003.
Taxpayers may also e-file an extension request using tax preparation software on their own computer or by going to a tax preparer. Those filing by computer get an acknowledgment that the IRS has received their request.
If you want to mail your request, you can send in Form 4868, extension of time to file, to the IRS.
If you put zero and the IRS decides that you willfully supplied the wrong values on the form, there could be additional penalties.
Just FYI - you don't have to have any filing programs. Turbotax and HR Block both have online filing programs.
