JA: What is the make/model of your car?
Customer: 91 legacy

Hi Im David, thanks for visiting the site. whats the noise sound like? knocking? tapping? pinging? rattling? squealing? whining? that is too vague a question to be answered ...........??

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Sounds as if something is rattling when engine is running. turning AC on or off makes no difference. I suspect the water pump? Car has low mileage is in AZ.

is the car running ok? not overheating? no check engine light?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
engine seems to run ok. noise seems to be coming from bottom of engine and there is an unusual odor.
Customer: replied 1 month ago.
fluid levels are fine
Expert:  david craig replied 1 month ago.

Im thinking its a heat shield that came loose, from the catalytic converter area, or the heat shield around the starter. the odor might be a bit of oil dripping on the exhaust. very difficult to diagnose without being there to hear, smell, see, feel.........

Hard for me to tell as I am 2000 miles away. Sounds like a possible answer though. She has taken a cab to work, so can not be checked just now. TTYL
