1988 subaru gl was running with hood up. suddenly stopped -

Customer Question

1988 subaru gl was running with hood up. suddenly stopped - starter turns engine normal. 3 months before I had put on all new parts from coil to spark plugs. Now no spark at plugs. rotor turns. not a gas problem. I borrowed a coil from a working 88 plymouth -did not help. any test to find problem
JA: Has the vehicle turned into a gas hog? And how does it start -- same as usual?
Customer: it starts on first cylinder over hard to say, but it seems to use a bit more gas, but was getting 33 to galon but not so sure about recent time - but it could be true
JA: Are you fixing your 88 yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: yes -meter to check wire
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: meter to check wires -different coil checked all plugs tried starting fluid cleaned distributortor cap did find bit of oil incap -seems to run in from engine as after cleaning there was tiny stream of oil on bottom of distribributor below rotor

have you isolated the coil and checked spark right off the coil itself, just to eliminate ign wires and distributor problems?

Customer: replied 6 months ago.
I believe the coil ,and wires are good
Expert:  david craig replied 6 months ago.

is that thing still carbed or do you have one that injected?

Expert:  david craig replied 6 months ago.

is it a justy or xt?

Customer: replied 6 months ago.
It seems that the problem is in the distributor but I want to know if there is any part beyond the distributor -such as a box above the fender well or else where that shut down the spark to the plug

1.2 but only looking at booklet that came with car so not sure - no marking on car --also might be over filled some with motor oil

1.2 with a carburetor or not?

replace the oil seal on the bottom of the distributor. the cam/crank/ignition sensors are getting contaminated with oil
