Customer Question

Hello. I have a 2003 Subaru Legacy and the temp needle goes up and down when driving. Doesn't overheat but gets one line above the normal.

is it in the red? are the fans reading?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
No it's gets to the 3/4 quarter mark on the temp dial for a minute then fans come on and cools it down to normal. Gets hotter when I'm idling at a upward/downward hill but does manage to cool it's self down eventually. I just never had the car's temp fluctuate like that

what temp t stat did you use?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Bought it from Subaru. Fans seem to come on kind of late when the temp is already past normal

can you tell what temp they kick on with your scan tool?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
No I don't have a scan tool
Expert:  john -aka eauto replied 1 year ago.

it honestly sounds normal cooling fans generally kick on between 210 and 220 so its slightly above he normal zone..but a good scan tool with live data will confirm the temp they activate

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
My car never did that before the head gasket change. It idled at normal now if I'm on a hill the the temp will go up as far as one line before the red and then it cools down. I've never had a car that did that. What would be causing this to happen? In the summer I'm sure the temp of car will get even hotter so I'm trying to avoid and need some more insight

did you get all the air out of the system? is the fluid full?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
the mechanic took air out the system and fluids are good

and your positive both fans are functioning correct?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I hear the fans come on but I would have to check and see if both fans are working. Brand new radiator so I would hope so. I'll get back to you on that
